2015 RDJF Scholarship Application

The Roderick D. Jones Foundation Scholarship is offered to students ages 13 to 19 who maintain a 2.0 GPA or better.

 

Time to Apply for the 2016 RDJF  Awards!! We welcome all applications with this year’s emphasis on horn and keyboard players.

RDJF is now accepting applications for its 2016 -2017 class.  The 2016 Awards Ceremony will be held at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center.

Students must submit the following information:

  • Your Name
  • Your Age
  • If under 18, Name of Parent/Guardian
  • Your School or College
  • Your current GPA
  • Phone Number including area code
  • Email address
  • Students must also submit a photograph and a video or YouTube link.

Students must submit an essay ( 1-2 pages):

  • Describing themselves
  • Their goals that pertain to their interest in music.
  • Why music is so important to them?
  • Their plans for continued education and possible career aspirations.

Students may submit video or links to video along with their written applications but it is not required. Students must also be proficient with their instrument (including vocals).  There will be an audition for the selected finalists.

The chosen winners will receive a $500 award and perform as the featured act at an awards gala that will include past RDJF winners, RDJF Program Director Cornelius Mims, a UCLA/FOJ ensemble and a surprise special guest star.  Last year’s Guest Stars were Grammy Award winner guitarist Paul Jackson, Jr. and Grammy Award winning Latin Jazz artist Dr. Bobby Rodriguez.  

The RDJF 2014-2015 Class were also the recipients of an all-expense paid to trip to New Orleans and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Academy where they had Master Classes the faculty of the Jazz Studies Department of Loyola University and 2015 Artist in Residence, Patrice Rushen.  The RDJF winners were also invited to perform at the Irving Mayfield Jazz Playhouse at the beautiful Sonata Resort in the French Quarter.  This year’s trip is planned for an All Star Blues Festival in Mississippi.

The scholarship award recipients will also have many opportunities to perform both as a group and individually throughout the year on various projects and events including performing at the Long Beach Bayou Festival and , the Kids In The Spotlight Awards at Fox Studios as well as attending industry events such as NAMM or mentoring events with industry professionals like Ricky Minor, Music Director for American Idol.

RDJF will be accepting applications for the 2016-2017 class starting April 1, 2016 through August 31, 2016.  Send a video or YouTube link with your application.  While attendance at any one event or performance is not mandatory, RDJF winners should be ready to participate in various events throughout the year as an RDJF Winner.
